Holy Shift! How Chiropractic Works for Patients With Lumbar Lateral Shifts

Addressing a Shift in Your Posture

Recently, one of our patients, Paul, visited our chiropractic office for severe lower back pain. In the first picture, you’ll see him angled severely to the side. Believe it or not, this was the only way Paul felt comfortable walking and standing.

We call this change in posture a “side shift,” or lumbar lateral shift. This type of change in your body is commonly associated with disc pathology, or what you might experience as pain travelling from the back into the legs, pins and needles feeling, numbness, muscle spasms, and a resulting fear and avoidance of movement.

Early in the initial shift, you may also experience increased stress on the autonomic nervous system, which may result in syncope or fainting.

Drug-Free, Non-Invasive Alternatives for Care

In acute onset of lumbar lateral shift or side shift, sometimes called sciatic scoliosis, patients like Paul may benefit from comprehensive chiropractic care in several ways. The manual correction through chiropractic care may rapidly reverse the deformity and reduce pain, while consistent adjustments to realign the spine work to improve posture overall.

It’s a drug-free, non-invasive method to manage a condition that can result in severe symptoms for patients, allowing them to correct their posture, regain mobility, and begin living life the way they want, free from pain or discomfort.
